Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Says Kiké Hernández Will Play Wednesday Against Blue Jays

Tuesday, the Dodgers reacquired Kiké Hernàndez from the Boston Red Sox for two little-known relievers. For some time, the Dodgers wanted a right-handed-hitting outfielder, and Hernàndez fits this profile plus he can play second base.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Hernàndez will primarily play center field and some second base. Wednesday, he’s expected to start in center field against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers hope he will help them do better against left-handed pitching, a problem for years.

#Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Kiké Hernández will play against left-handed pitching, including tomorrow against the Blue Jays. He’s not sure where he’ll play defensively yet, but expect mostly center field and second base.

Hernàndez was a Dodger from 2015 to 2020. He hit a game-tying home run in Game 7 of the 2020 NLCS against the Atlanta Braves. During his Dodger tenure, he was a fan favorite because of his defensive prowess wherever he played on the diamond and his personality. As a free agent, Hernàndez signed with the Red Sox ahead of the 2021 season.

This season has been a struggle for Hernàndez. When Trevor Story had Tommy John surgery in January, the Red Sox believed Hernàndez could play shortstop regularly. In 64 games at shortstop, he committed 14 errors. Obviously, this disappointed the Red Sox.

Kiké Hernández is in the midst of his worst year as a pro with an OPS of .599 and an OPS of .652 against lefties.

The Dodgers are buying low, hoping he can get back to his career .737 OPS with LA.

He’ll add depth in the infield and outfield, and hopefully improve his bat.

Offensively, this season hasn’t been good for him. Hernàndez has a .222 batting average with 6 home runs and 31 RBI.  However, Dodger hitting coaches think they saw something on video that will unlock something for Hernàndez.

A big piece as to why the #Dodgers got Kiké Hernández was because the hitting coaches saw some things on tape that could help him moving forward. That, of course, remains to be seen.

Even if it doesn’t work, his offensive production is much better than Miguel Vargas who was sent down to Oklahoma City during the All-Star break.

Since Hernàndez has extensive postseason experience, he knows how to handle the pressure.
