The Cincinnati Reds (55-47) just cannot beat the Milwaukee Brewers (56-45) in 2023. Last night saw the Brewers win on a walk-off single by Christian Yelich and the Reds record drop to 2-9 against the team they’re chasing in the NL Central.
But as the saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” The Reds will try again tonight and hope to succeed. Andrew Abbott takes the mound for Cincinnati, and he’ll be opposed by all-star pitcher Corbin Burnes. First pitch is at 8:10 pm EDT.

Starting Pitchers
Andrew Abbott
Abbott is coming off the best start of his young career, a one-hit shutout in eight innings against the San Francisco Giants. He now gets to face the team that he’s already faced three times in the two months he’s been a Red. He’s had mixed results in those three starts. In 16.1 innings, he’s given up eight runs on 13 hits with 15 strikeouts and seven walks. However, six of those runs came on July 7 in Milwaukee when he didn’t make it through the fifth inning. His starts against the Brewers at GABP have both been quality starts, but he did give up two solo home runs to Christian Yelich and William Contreras at GABP. I guess it’s no coincidence they are hitting first and second in the Brewers lineup tonight.

Corbin Burnes
If you delve into Corbin Burnes’ stats, he really has not performed like he has in the past. Yes, he still strikes out hitters at a high rate and his ERA is a solid 3.49, but he’s also walked 42 batters, nine shy of his entire total last season, and his ERA is the highest it’s been since 2019 when he predominantly appeared out of the bullpen.
Why then does it feel like he’s going to be the Cy Young winner every time he’s pitched against the Reds this season? Well, it’s because he’s faced the Reds lineup three times already in 2023 (more than any other team), and the Reds have one of the lowest batting averages against him at .117. They also have a .254 OBP against Burnes, and in 71 plate appearances against him, Reds batters have struck out 26 times. Fourth times a charm for the Reds?
