The Cincinnati Reds have announced several roster moves today. Wil Myers has been placed on the injured list, but with no designation. We all know what that means these days. The team also placed pitcher Graham Ashcraft on the bereavement list. Cincinnati has called up reliever Casey Legumina from Triple-A Louisville to join the pitching staff for the time being.
If you picked up on the fact that the Reds are down two players that were on the roster yesterday and only added one play, then you are not alone. There could be a reason for that. With no designation of an injury for Wil Myers it’s likely that he’s on the list due to an illness. There is no timetable for how long a player has to remain there and if it turns out that he can return tomorrow, the team won’t need to recall someone from the minors and then send them back tomorrow for essentially no reason. If Myers is not able to return then you would expect the team to make another roster addition before the series begins in Oakland on Friday night.
Graham Ashcraft made his start yesterday afternoon in the Reds walk-off win, sweeping Oakland in the process. His grandmother passed away this week, but he wanted to pitch the game to honor her (and against her favorite team, too). Mark Sheldon of Reds.com wrote about it a bit on Wednesday following the game. Ashcraft can be on the bereavement list for up to three days.
Casey Legumina is back in the big leagues. The right-handed reliever debuted earlier this year. He threw 2.0 shutout inning sin his debut on April 15th. Three days later he allowed a run in 2.1 innings against Tampa Bay. He was optioned back to Triple-A after that. Between his time in Louisville and Cincinnati he’s thrown 13.0 innings, walked just two batters, and he’s struck out 13.
