Dodgers superstar first baseman Freddie Freeman left Team Canada’s 5-0 win over Colombia in the World Baseball Classic early with an apparent hamstring injury.
After the game, Canada’s manager, Ernie Witt, spoke to reporters, and said he doesn’t “foresee” Freeman being in the lineup on Wednesday against Mexico. He also gave a slight update on the injury, saying Freeman felt tightness in his hamstring. The update is via Jorge Castillo of the LA Times.
There are a few things to take away from this. One, clearly this is more serious than just a cramp if it’s expected to keep Freeman out of the lineup tomorrow. Two, Freeman felt tightness in his hamstring, likely alluding to it being some sort of strain. Ideally, it’s just tightness, and the pain subsides within the next few days. But we don’t know anything for sure until we get a larger update.
While it’s unfortunate for Canada, who’s currently playing important games in the World Baseball Classic, Freeman needs to be fully healthy by March 30, Opening Day for the Dodgers season.
We’ll continue to provide updates on Freeman as we learn more, but for now, we know he’s likely to miss tomorrow’s game against Mexico for Team Canada. That can’t be news that Freeman wants to hear, especially considering the reason he’s playing for Canada in the first place, so we wish him the best as he deals with this unfortunate injury.
