If you are starting a team in a new dynasty league, take a look at the position breakdown of the top 200 players, using the main position for utility players except for one, who plays basically any position in the field.
What quickly jumps out is the lack of depth at second base and third base. The second and third base positions alone add up to only one more Top 100 player than the shortstop position. There are some great players at those two positions, but the overall quality lacks compared to shortstop or first base.
When it comes to catchers and relief pitchers, I can tell you right now that there are few of them ranked. There are a lot of good catchers, but many of them will get only 110 or so starts or they are getting up in age, making them less than desired dynasty options.
As for the relievers, I never chase saves (or holds if your league has them). How many players dread chasing Aroldis Chapman last year or a host of other top closers? Meanwhile, five new closer will come out of the woodwork this year that you can get in the middle of the season.

Large Numbers, But Not Necessarily Top Talent
Thanks in large part to how many outfielders and pitchers are used in baseball, those two positions obviously account for a large portion of the top-ranked players. But remember, there are at least 150 starting pitchers (and actually more) that teams use and at least 90 outfielders. Out of the minimum of 150 starters in MLB, only 20% are ranked in the Top 100 and only 28% of outfielders are ranked in the Top 100.
Meanwhile, 47% of MLB starting shortstops are ranked in the Top 100 and 33% of first basemen. So if there is a run on shortstops at the top of the draft or even first basemen, don’t go into panic mode.
There are plenty of great to very good starting shortstops who will be available in the middle rounds. So perhaps when people are staying on the straight line, you should take that time to grab a top third baseman or second baseman or go crazy and grab that one catcher who everyone is eyeing but are too afraid to take.
What If You’re a Seasoned Vet?
If you are in an established dynasty league or two (or three, four or five), then a number of these players are already off the board. Depending on position scarcity, the values of some of these players will greatly change. In that case, use these rankings as a guide, because that is what these rankings really are. You’ve already built a team, so you have a strategy. But maybe a player listed here is ranked higher, or lower than you would expect.
No matter what, use the links under each tier to see what I have previously written about each player ranked in that tier. You may agree or disagree with my thinking, but it will probably solidify what you think about a particular player.
