We are in the thick of draft season now and we have real, live draft data to sift through. Numbers nerds, assemble! We have spreadsheets, charts, and ADP, oh my! It was a busy week here at Razzball Commenter Leagues HQ but I’ve gone through each league that has drafted and added their drafts to a master spreadsheet in order to calculate RCL ADP. We’ve had seven leagues draft already! That’s not much data to come to full conclusions on, but we can look anyway. All leagues have gone off without a hitch and we have plenty more to fill up, including some spots in some money leagues which tend to be a little more competitive.
PSA: We don’t want to have any leagues get axed, so if you notice your league is not full the day of or day before the draft, hit us up on Twitter: @Razzball or @MattTruss and let us know. You can also leave a comment in Grey’s most recent post and/or invite a friend to join. I know, sacrilege to tell your fantasy baseball friends you read Razzball, but sharing is caring. Speaking of sharing, jump below and I’ll share with you a fancy RCL ADP spreadsheet for your perusing pleasure.
DRAFT TRENDS
We’ve got seven leagues’ worth of draft data to peek at. Being first to draft means first to be criticized, so we’ll dive into the numbers and see what’s going on in the early draft season.
THE FIRST PICK OF THE 2023 FANTASY BASEBALL DRAFT IS…
Aaron Judge (3) – Judge has been taken at the 1.01 spot more than anyone else so far but this is the closest first-round ADP I’ve ever seen. Judge and Acuna have the same (3.29) and right behind them are Trea, Jose, and Shohei at 3.57 with Julio sitting at 4. As more and more drafts fire off these will continue to shift and it will be interesting to see where these all shake out. This year, more than ever I think I want to draft in the 6 or 7 spot and just take whoever falls.
WE DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ NFBC ADP
We’ve got RCL ADP! Here’s a list from our seven league sample of some guys I’m lusting for this year and some general notes. If there’s an ADP you’re curious about for my next update, fire away and I’ll add them to the chart next time out. This time around I decided to look at some of the kids everyone is excited to draft as well as some soon-to-be AARP members.
Bobby Witt is on the verge of the first round, we’ll see if Grey’s schmohawk post keeps that price suppressed.
The pair of baby Braves can be had at the end of the third round, but I’m probably not grabbing these two unless they fall to the fourth.
I need some Corbin Carroll in my portfolio, but it hasn’t happened yet, probably because I’m usually grabbing my first starter around this point. Maybe I need to try and grab one earlier or keep waiting and see what happens.
Gunnar is a nice, “I’ve missed out on all the top 3B” consolation prize but I’ve also not managed to add im just yet. I have however landed some Jordan Walker as an extra emergency 3B option and I love that. Watch this ADP ballon as the preseason marches on. By the third week in March, he’ll be around 120, easily.
I’ve managed to grab Senga in a couple spots but have no Grayson shares just yet. If you can manage to get Jordan Walker and Grayson Rodriguez on the same team, go buy a lotto ticket while you’re at it.
Now, out with the new, in with the old:
Max Scherzer has fallen from the second round last year to fourth this year, trading spots with Paul Goldschmidt. Goldy has had quite the rise over the past three seasons going from ADP 80, to 46, to now 23. What a resurgence, but that has to stop eventually, right? It makes me nervous about drafting him this year and so far I’ve avoided it, we’ll see if that’s a mistake. Look at J.D. Martinez who has gone from ADP 80 last year to ADP 180 this year.
Lance Lynn is taking about a 70 spot knock this season falling from ADP 66 to ADP 133. Grey still thinks he’s an SP2 being drafted as an SP3, but I’m thinking he might actually be a SP5.
Verlander and Goldy are somehow just freaks who are defying father time it would seem.
Any of these vets you’re nervous about drafting?
If you made it this far, you earn a reward. I told you I was a numbers nerd. Now you can take a look at any player you want as more and more data is collected. I’ll be keeping that sheet up to date as I collect draft data, so bookmark it and check back often. Next, head down to the spreadsheet below and fill up some more leagues so we have even more data to chew through!
TO JOIN A LEAGUE
Click the LINK in the ‘League Link’ column (see below grid) for the time you want and YOU’RE IN. Damn, that’s too easy. Oh, I guess I should also mention make sure you’re joining a league for free or for money, depending on your preference. If you want a league for money, then 1) Click the link. 2) Pay the money. That’s it! No pesky third requirement! Again, Fantrax and Razzball take no money. You can join as many free or paid leagues as you like. To quit a league, go to OTHER –> All Options –> Quit League (located at the bottom). Now go join some leagues!
