On Wednesday, the Dodgers announced a series of shake-ups to the major league changes to the coaching staff. Danny Lehmann is moving to the bench coach role, while Bob Geren will be transitioning to a major league field coordinator role. Juan Toribio of MLB.com was amongst the people to report on the move.
Lehmann has spent the last few seasons as the Game Planning and Communications coach. He joined the team in 2018 in that role, but spent a brief time in 2019 as a special assistant, before going back to his Game Planning role. Now, he’ll be working as the team’s bench coach, replacing Geren.
Geren, who’s been the bench coach since 2016, will be moving to a new role for the first time. Geren has been manager Dave Roberts’ right-hand man for the last seven seasons, so it’ll be interesting to see what the dynamic is in the dugout this season. Geren was the main guy in charge of challenges, among other things, so we’ll see what that looks like for the Dodgers in 2023.
Notably, Geren, who has previous managerial experience with the Oakland A’s, has been a popular name in recent offseasons for clubs interviewing for new managers. He’s twice been in the mix for the New York Mets job over the last handful of years.
The rest of Dave Roberts’ coaching staff will remain intact.
