Carlos Rodon Rumors: Dodgers Primed to Pass on Free Agent Pitcher

Over at the New York Post, Jon Heyman has an article about the market for left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodon, the biggest name left on the pitching market. The main topic of Heyman’s article is that the Yankees are interested in Rodon and intend to make him an offer soon, but the most notable element for our purposes here is a word that never shows up.

The initial indication is that Rodon seeks seven-plus years at $200 million plus, and while the Yankees seem reluctant to go to that length, they also seem very serious and hopeful about this pursuit. …

Despite the competition for Rodon, easily the best starter remaining on the market, the Yankees seem fairly optimistic. The incumbent Giants have been in on Rodon, but the Yankees believe Rodon — a Miamian who like Trea Turner played at North Carolina State — would prefer to be east. The Yankees already won the biggest battle for their own superstar free agent Aaron Judge in a high-priced war with the Giants and Padres. The Rangers, Orioles, Twins and others have also checked in on Rodon, though the extent of their interest isn’t known.

The Dodgers are mentioned only once in the article, in a paragraph about teams that have interest in Dansby Swanson. The teams mentioned as interested in Rodon are the Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Orioles, and Twins, with the standard “and others” tacked on at the end.

The Dodgers don’t necessarily need a starter of Rodon’s caliber, and with his expected salary and the qualifying offer penalties, it’s not shocking that they’re not more heavily involved in the bidding. It’s a little surprising Heyman didn’t at least mention Los Angeles in his role as Scott Boras’s Official Puppet, though, because L.A. is often used to drive prices up in situations like this.

Either way, it looks like we can cross Carlos Rodon off our Christmas wish list.
