Due to recent injuries in Tony Gonsolin and Walker Buehler, the Dodgers have been on the hunt for their sixth man in the pitching rotation. LA Prospect, Ryan Pepiot made his major league debut this past May and has gotten 7 starts this season including three in August but doesn’t look likely to fill that spot permanently.
However, Pepiot is still riding high off a quality start in which he held the Miami Marlins to just two runs over six innings while collecting a career-high seven strikeouts. Overall, the 25-year-old is 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA and a WHIP of 1.40 across 25 innings.
The Butler alum is still young and has lots of opportunity to gain more experience and maybe now is a better time than ever. With a 91-41 overall record thanks to a hefty 12-1 win on Saturday, the Dodgers have some playing room to get things figured out and secured before the postseason.
On Sunday, Pepiot is scheduled to followup to lefty Caleb Ferguson in the final game of the series vs. the Padres. Ferguson is 1–0 this season with an 1.85 ERA and 23 SO. He will match up against Mike Clevinger who is 5–5 with a 3.59 ERA and 73 SO this season.
Now since Pepiot was optioned to Oklahoma City on August 22nd, he is ineligible to get recalled since 15 days have not passed. However, he will be replacing David Price who will be headed to the IL on Sunday.
Fortunately Price’s injury seems to be minor but his presence will be missed as part of the Dodgers bullpen. The seasoned veteran has put out a solid 38 innings of work collecting 2 wins to no losses, a save, 37 strikeouts, and had posted a 2.58 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP before the injury.
Before the change, Andrew Heaney was scheduled to get the Sunday start but with the special appearance of Pepiot, he will now take an extra day off and take the mound on Monday in the series opener against the Giants.
Sunday afternoon’s game will be broadcasted on ESPN starting at 4:08 PM EST.
