On paper, the Dodgers game on Sunday afternoon should have gone much differently. They had rookie Ryan Pepiot going head-to-head with potential Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara. He has gone 7 or more innings in every other start this month until he ran into the Los Angeles offense this weekend.
Alcantara immediately got hit hard by the Dodgers. Will Smith singled home Mookie Betts in the 1st, and Cody Bellinger launched his 17th home run of the season with Joey Gallo on base. They added to it in the 3rd with a Max Muncy single and another couple of big hits the next inning that knocked Sandy out of the game.
For Alcantara, it was by far the shortest outing of his 2022 season. The Dodgers made him throw 89 pitches and hung up more runs on him than any team has all season. After the loss, Alcantara couldn’t seem to figure out what had happened and why he
“I don’t know what happened… I think they have a lot of stuff to look for something for pitchers.”
It’s hard to tell what he’s hinting at, but we can assume that Sandy is pointing towards the Dodgers preparation. And they looked locked in on every pitch that he threw in their direction. His ERA skyrocketed from 1.92 before the outing to 2.19 after. That puts Tony Gonsolin at the top of the National League for ERA.
But more than anything, it’s a good reminder that the Dodgers can hit very good pitching. As Dave Roberts said after the game, Alcantara is the type of pitcher that they will be seeing in the playoffs. Sunday showed the league that they are ready for it.
