Luis Cessa to join the Cincinnati Reds rotation

The Cincinnati Reds made some roster moves today as they activated Donovan Solano and Buck Farmer, while playing Albert Almora Jr. on the injured list, and optioning T.J. Zeuch to Triple-A Louisville.

With T.J. Zeuch heading back to Triple-A, that opens up a spot in the rotation. Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Luis Cessa will start on Monday and he will remain in the rotation for the time being. Nightengale also reports that Hunter Greene is expected to throw a bullpen session on Sunday and would make at least one rehab start before returning to the Cincinnati rotation. For Cessa it will be his second start of the season – he pitched the 1st inning against the Dodgers on April 14th and allowed three runs on five hits. The last time he was used as an actual starter instead of an opener was in 2018 with the New York Yankees.

T.J. Zeuch, who had been pitching well in Triple-A with the Louisville Bats when he was called up two weeks ago, struggled in both of his big league starts with the Reds. He allowed 17 hits, three walks, hit two batters, and allowed 12 earned runs in 8.0 innings between his two outings. He’ll head back to the minors to work on things and try to make his way back.

Albert Almora Jr. made two outstanding catches in the game on Friday night against Pittsburgh. But a diving attempt late in the game shook him up. Apparently he’s still feeling the ramifications of that one and he’s going to miss at least the next ten days as he recovers. Donovan Solano has missed the last four days after he was placed on the paternity list for the first three days and then the restricted list yesterday. He’s back on the roster today and in the starting lineup as the Reds designated hitter tonight.
