The clock is ticking on contending teams like the Dodgers making roster upgrades before Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline (3PM PT). LA made a small move on Saturday in acquiring right-handed reliever Chris Martin from the Cubs in exchange for utility man Zach McKinstry. The Dodgers have been linked to big trade targets like Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, but they’ve also been mentioned with some more under-the-radar impact players like the Reds’ Brandon Drury.
It’s not the first time the Dodgers have popped up on the Drury radar, but on Sunday afternoon, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported that LA, along with the Mariners and the Braves, are among the teams that are kicking the tires on a possible Drury trade.
“Reds super utility ace Brandon Drury, posting an .845 OPS while earning $900k this season, is one of the most popular names in industry trade talks today. The Mariners, Dodgers, and Braves are among the teams that have at least checked in.”
Drury, who does have some outfield experience but has primarily played in the infield for the Reds this year, is having the best season of his eight-year MLB career. After playing for four teams between 2017 and 2021, the 29-year-old signed on the cheap with the cheap Reds this offseason.
The bet has paid off for both the Reds and Drury.
The right-handed hitter has a career-high 125 OPS+ and a 2.2 WAR this season. He’s absolutely mashed left-handed pitching – he owns a 1.042 OPS against southpaws through Saturday.
Drury might cost the Dodgers a mid-level prospect, but could be a nice upgrade who can play second base, third base, and in the outfield.
